this is probably going to sound really stupid and really long basically this is the reason why i'm not offering free graphics anymore hahha i'm stupid sorry
Do you think it's acceptable to use other people's art on a layout without their permission? Back when the community was still super active I used to see a lot of layouts using edited fanart as images (I used to do it myself, too).
But now I'm wondering, is it really okay to take an artist's work, edit it, then slap it on coding without the artist's consent? I know that, for example, a lot of artists on Pixiv really hate to see their art edited and reposted around (some of them even deleted their account and stopped uploading art, after they found people reposting/editing their stuff).
I'm not really talking about source, it's easy to link to an artist's page (but sometimes people link the source as Zerochan or Gelbooru, which are not legitimate sources at all), I'm talking asking the artists if they're okay with us editing their art and using it on our sites.
Some people in this community were/are very strict with rules on their graphics, especially the "don't steal, don't claim as your own" part. But most, if not all of them are using someone else's art that they edited (I doubt anyone takes the time to ask the artist, especially with Japanese artists on Pixiv and such).
tl;dr - should we source art and ask for permissiong, why/why not

I've always tried to use art from resource sites or the resource section on deviantArt. There are quite a few artists that are happy to let you use their art if you ask and link back to them.

"i used this nice picture ____ drew" vs "i used this nice picture i found somewhere" even when you source, that doesn't mean the artist wants you to put up their art somewhere else, or splatter colours and brushes all over it. and, bringing back the example with pixiv, it's hard to ask permission from someone who doesn't speak a word of english. just like it's hard for them to ask someone to remove reposted/edited art from a site when they don't understand japanese.

True. Plus, when you just say, "I got this from Zerochan/Pixiv," it's like you're crediting the site as the owner of the art, not the artist. And I've noticed, too, that sometimes the uploader isn't the actual artist. That makes it more confusing.

people who won't at least source are the worse though. it literally takes 30 seconds tracing the source to pixiv by using saucenao or whatever. you can even drag the image in google and find a source jfc is that so hard. sometimes the uploader isn't the actual artist

Legally, at least sourcing is the same as not sourcing. It's the having permission that matters. So, to me, the ethical and legal thing to do is ask permission and credit the artist.

omg
okay, okay. When we all started out, it was acceptable amongst ourselves to use whatever images we pleased. As time went on, we saw how wrong this was and that it was not okay for us to use artwork etc on our layouts, if the art wasn't ours.
That's fair enough - taking art and slapping it on a layout of your own is not okay, especially if you don't link back to where you found it.
However! There are some people who are new to webmastering and don't realize this. Then, there are people who see their fault and do nothing about it.
So why not just take screen shots from movies etc and use those? Welllllll, if you're saying that taking art is wrong, isn't taking screenies from a Pokemon movie or whatever technically taking art too?
Idk.
At the moment, I have three layouts on my site, all of which are very quick and were really only to help me get used to coding, graphics, etc again. I'll only be keeping the Molly Hale layout, because it's just screenshots. But then again, is it really okay for me to edit frames from a movie? My tablet has been acting up for the past week, so I haven't been able to sit down and draw anything up for myself yet. I honestly don't know.
As for sourcing, I think it's a good idea to source any art that you use, if you use it. But the thing is, people post free icons etc and don't link the artist, and then people who use the icons or whatever don't realize that the publisher wasn't the artist.
If the artist asks you to remove whatever it is you've posted, it's just sense to do so.
All-in-all, reposting is going to happen. That's just that - people are always reposting things in various ways. I'm guilty of this; not even gonna deny it.
I could ramble but I'll just stop here whoops.

If someone else drew it and you didn't, you're using someone else's work. End of story.
However, definitely if you use someone's work with their permission and a link back is fine. I don't see the issue. Unless you're making money with their art....then that's wrong.
